EL CASTILLO
REAL or "Royal Castle" is located on the northeast side of the
island, majestically facing out over the Caribbean. As one of the last
outposts of the Post-Classic Maya Civilization, it is a fine example of
a two-roomed structure with typical corbelled-vaulted roofs.
Considering the
open-ness to the elements, it is in remarkably good condition after 700
years and testifies to the mastery of the Maya craftsmen builders. The
site was the destination for pilgrims from all over the Maya area.
