EL CARACOL is a
small shrine situated on the south point of the island of Cozumel, close
to the lighthouse at Punta Celerain.
It's post-classic
structure was built in two stages. It has entrances on all four sides.
A unique feature is a miniature shrine on top. The cupola is hollow and
has four lines of conch shell trumpets (caracoles) embedded into it in
such a manner that they sound in a strong wind.
This particular aspect
indicated an association of this building with the god Kukulcan
(feathered serpent).
